Best Things To Do in Fernley, Nevada

The historic town of Fernley is nestled in the foothills of the Spring Mountains, along the western edge of the Virgin Valley. It’s a small town with a rich history, and it’s also a great place to explore the outdoors if you love nature. There are plenty of things to do in Fernley if you have time to explore, and these are our favorite things to do in town.

Take a walk Through History at Fernley Museum

It would be hard to imagine a more historic place to visit in the Spring Mountains than Fernley. The small town of fewer than 2,000 people is situated right at the foot of the serenely beautiful peaks, and it’s the home of the oldest Western town in Nevada.

The Fernley Museum is located in the historic West Hotel, and it tells the story of the area from prehistoric times through the mid-1800s. The museum also has a great variety of artifacts from all periods of Nevada’s history, and there’s even a Native American culture room for those who want to learn more about the local area’s culture.

Hike in the Spring Mountains

The Spring Mountains National Recreation Area is the perfect place to go hiking in the Spring Mountains. The range is located in both Nevada and California, with its northwestern boundary running along the western boundary of Fernley. The mountains are part of the Great Basin, and they contain some of the most rugged and wild country in the Intermountain West.

You can find more than 100 miles of trails in the NCA area, and many of them are remote and offer truly spectacular views. Some of our favorites are Johnson Canyon and Wildrose trails, which weave through stands of pinyon and juniper. Both of these trails are strenuous and require good physical condition, but they’re well worth the effort.

Visit Fernley’s Art Walk

The Downtown area of Fernley is home to what’s known as the “Art Walk.” This is a collection of galleries and art studios that line Main Street, and it’s home to some truly beautiful artwork. The galleries are open during the day, and many of them offer free tours so you can learn more about the art while you’re there.

Go Camping

The Spring Mountains are home to some of the most beautiful campgrounds in the country. There are more than 50 sites in the NCA area that are open to the public, and they range from primitive to extremely luxurious. Many of the campgrounds are situated along the shores of Lakeview, a manmade reservoir that’s the result of the Shoshone Power Project.

Play Golf in the Spring Mountains

Golf is yet another sport played on Fernley’s historic links. The Spring Mountain course was first designed by famed golf course architect Donald Ross, and the entire 9-hole course is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The course dates back to 1913, and it played host to the Western Open in 1916 and ’17.

Eat at a Local Restaurant

There are many great restaurants in Fernley, and we particularly like the following dining establishments. The Red Onion has been a local favorite for more than 60 years, and it’s especially delicious during the summer months when they have outdoor seating.

If you’re looking for a more casual meal, we recommend the Blue Flannel Blue Plate Diner, which is an iconic place to try a burger or hot dog. It’s been around since 1939 and has been featured in books and films.

Stay at a Bed and Breakfast

If you have the time, a stay at a bed and breakfast in Fernley is a great way to experience the area. All of the cottages and historic inns are situated in the woods just a short walk from town. Many of them are within walking distance, and a few are even directly on Lakeview.

What are You Waiting For?

As you’ve seen, there is a lot to do in Fernley. The town is small and friendly, and if you are looking for that perfect place to raise a family, Fernley is it. There are plenty of activities for the family, as well as opportunities for you to grow personally and professionally. We hope you consider Fernley when you are looking for a place to call home!
