It’s a small town with a rich history, and it’s also a great place to explore the outdoors if you love nature. There are plenty of things to do in Fernley if you have time to explore, and these are our favorite things to do in town.

Take a walk Through History at Fernley Museum

It would be hard to imagine a more historic place to visit in the Spring Mountains than Fernley. Less than 2,000 people populate this charming little town nestled at the base of some stunningly peaceful mountains. The oldest Western town in Nevada is also located here.

The Fernley Museum is located in the historic West Hotel, and it tells the story of the area from prehistoric times through the mid-1800s. The museum also has a great variety of artifacts from all periods of Nevada’s history, and there’s even a Native American culture room for those who want to learn more about the local area’s culture.

Hike in the Spring Mountains

The Spring Mountains National Recreation Area is the perfect place to go hiking in the Spring Mountains. The range is located in both Nevada and California, with its northwestern boundary running along the western boundary of Fernley. The mountains are part of the Great Basin, and they contain some of the most rugged and wild country in the Intermountain West.

You can find more than 100 miles of trails in the NCA area, and many of them are remote and offer truly spectacular views. Some of our favorites are Johnson Canyon and Wildrose trails, which weave through stands of pinyon and juniper. Both of these trails are strenuous and require good physical condition, but they’re well worth the effort.

Visit Fernley’s Art Walk

The Downtown area of Fernley is home to what’s known as the “Art Walk.” Main Street’s galleries and art studios exhibit beautiful artwork and offer free tours.

Golf is yet another sport played on Fernley’s historic links. Spring Mountain course: 9 holes, designed by Donald Ross, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The course dates back to 1913, and it played host to the Western Open in 1916 and ’17.

Eat at a Local Restaurant

There are many great restaurants in Fernley, and we particularly like the following dining establishments. The Red Onion is a popular local spot with outdoor seating for a delightful summer dining experience.

Visit Blue Flannel Blue Plate Diner for a relaxed atmosphere and tasty burgers or hot dogs. It’s been around since 1939 and has been featured in books and films.
